The basics

What is kava?

Kava is a drink made from the root of a plant grown across the Pacific Islands. The root is ground and mixed with water, then shared. It's earthy and calming, it relaxes the body and eases conversation, and it contains no alcohol.

We pour two traditional kavas. Van Kava, made from Vanuatu root, is heavy, smooth and deeply relaxing. Waka Kava, made from Fijian waka root, is clean, bright and social.

For a gentler first taste, our Vanilla Kava and Chocolate Kava are blended with a scoop of protein for a creamy, richer shell. Every shell is 10 oz.

    We'll explain what each kava is like and help you choose. No jargon, no judgment.

  2. Start with one shell

    Waka Kava is a good first pour. Expect a slight tingle on your lips and tongue. That's normal.

  3. Give it 15 minutes

    Sip, settle in, and see how you feel before deciding on a second.

  • Kava is served to guests 21 and over. Please bring a valid ID.
  • Don't combine kava with alcohol, sedatives or other medication.
  • Not for use during pregnancy or while nursing.
  • Kava products have, in rare cases, been linked to serious liver injury. If you have liver problems or a health condition, talk to your doctor first.
  • Kava can make you drowsy. If you feel its effects, don't drive.

What does kava feel like?

Most people describe kava as calming and sociable: the body relaxes and conversation comes easier, while the head stays clear. Your lips and tongue may tingle or go a little numb. That's normal, and it fades.

What does kava taste like?

Earthy and a little peppery. It's an acquired taste for some, which is why we also pour Vanilla Kava and Chocolate Kava, blended with protein for a creamier, sweeter shell.

Does kava have alcohol in it?

No. Kava is made from a root and water. It isn't fermented or distilled, and BulaBula doesn't serve alcohol at all.

How much kava should I drink my first time?

Start with one 10 oz shell and give it 15 minutes before deciding on another. Tell us it's your first time and we'll walk you through it.

Is kava safe?

Kava has been drunk in the Pacific for centuries, but it isn't for everyone. The FDA has advised that kava products have, in rare cases, been linked to serious liver injury. Skip kava if you're pregnant or nursing, have liver problems, or take medication, and never combine it with alcohol. If you're unsure, ask your doctor first.

Can I drive after drinking kava?

Kava can make you drowsy and slow your reactions. If you feel its effects, don't drive. Give it time or get a ride.
