Vanilla Kava: An Easier First Shell
· 1 min read · By BulaBula
Ask ten people what kava tastes like and you'll get ten versions of the same answer: earthy, a little peppery, and not much like anything else. Some people love it from the first sip. Plenty don't, at least not right away.
That's why one of the three kavas on our menu comes dressed up.
The flavored shell
Vanilla Kava ($8) is our Van Kava with a scoop of vanilla protein. Creamy and rich, with the earthiness softened.
It starts with the same traditional Vanuatu kava as the plain shell. The protein adds body and sweetness, so what you're holding tastes closer to a milkshake than a mud puddle. It's the drink we hand to people who say "I want to try kava, but I've heard about the taste."
Why not just add syrup?
We could, but protein does two things at once: it rounds off the flavor, and it gives the shell some substance, so it sits a little easier if you haven't eaten. It also keeps the drink honest. There's no sugar bomb hiding the kava; the root is still the point.
When the plain shell is the better call
If you're curious about kava the way it's traditionally served, order Waka Kava ($6). It's Fijian waka root, clean and bright, and the taste is part of the experience. Clap once, say bula, and drink.
If you'd rather ease in, there's no shame in the Vanilla. Plenty of regulars never switch.
A few reminders
Kava is served to guests 21 and over. Give your first shell 15 minutes before deciding on another, expect a little tingle on the lips, and don't mix kava with alcohol, sedatives or other medication. If you're pregnant, nursing or have liver problems, skip it, and if you take medication, ask your doctor first.
